Importance of Regular Dental Exams

We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental exam within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth, followed by regular check-ups every 6 months. For adults, we also suggest biannual visits—however, the frequency may be adjusted based on individual needs.

Early diagnosis and treatment of dental issues can significantly enhance treatment success and help prevent more extensive procedures in the future.

What to Expect During a Dental Exam

Our dental exams are thorough and designed to assess your overall oral health. Here’s what to expect during your visit:

  • Medical history review: We will assess how medical conditions or illnesses affect dental health and treatment.
  • Examination of teeth: Using dental instruments such as mouth mirrors, dental explorers, and high-intensity light, we will examine your teeth for decay, broken cusps or fractured edges, and cracked or worn-out restorations.
  • Oral cancer screening: The face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums will be checked for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum evaluation: Your gums and bone around the teeth will be checked for evidence of gingivitis (redness and swelling), periodontitis, or periodontal disease (bone loss).

Diagnostic X-Rays

X-rays are also an important part of your dental exam. They help us check for tooth decay and assess the supporting bone around your teeth.

The frequency of X-rays will depend on your individual needs, typically ranging from every 2 years for patients with minimal issues to every 6 months or annually for those prone to decay or gum problems. A panoramic x-ray is recommended every 3 to 5 years to evaluate wisdom teeth, sinuses, and potential infections or cysts in the jaws.

The Importance of Routine Dental Cleanings

Routine dental cleanings play a vital role in maintaining good oral hygiene. Even with diligent brushing and flossing, mineralized plaque can develop in hard-to-reach areas. Our professional cleaning services help keep your teeth and gums healthy and free from harmful bacteria.

Your dental cleaning appointment typically lasts between 30 minutes and an hour. It is performed by a trained hygienist, and a dentist is available for examination at the end.

What to Expect During Your Cleaning

The dental cleaning process consists of 2 key steps:

  • Scaling: The hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth. Depending on the hygienist’s preference, this can be done manually or with ultrasonic scalers. Scaling focuses on the areas around your teeth and gums to eliminate buildup.
  • Polishing: After scaling, the hygienist will polish your teeth to remove any remaining plaque and create a smooth finish. Finally, a fluoride treatment is applied to help prevent tooth decay.

Dental Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that offer a strong and natural-looking alternative to traditional fillings. At Greystone Dental, we use these to repair damaged teeth while preserving tooth structure.

Inlays and onlays are:

  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Have a natural appearance
  • Less invasive than crowns

Our process involves creating a precise restoration in a lab and bonding it to your tooth.

Individualized Care for Healthy Smiles

After your initial cleaning, we will determine the appropriate frequency of your cleaning appointments based on your individual needs. Cleaning intervals may vary from every 3 months for patients with gum issues to once a year for those with healthy gums.
