Root Canal Treatment: Preserving Your Teeth
At Greystone Dental, we understand that the thought of a root canal can be daunting. However, our team is here to provide compassionate care and effective solutions to help relieve discomfort and restore your tooth’s health.
A root canal is a dental procedure designed to save a severely decayed or infected tooth. When the pulp, the soft tissue within the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels, becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause significant discomfort.
Our team is in your corner for your root canal treatment—contact us to schedule your appointment today.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal Treatment
Several symptoms may indicate the need for a root canal, including:
- Spontaneous discomfort that will not subside.
- Severe tooth discomfort while chewing.
- Your tooth discomfort wakes you up at night.
- Teeth that are highly sensitive to hot or cold, with the sensitivity lingering for some time.
- Discoloration or darkening of the tooth.
- Swollen gums in the area of the tooth.
The Root Canal Process
Root canal treatment involves removing the infected pulp (nerve) from the tooth and sealing the root canals to prevent reinfection.
The procedure typically includes these steps:
- Initial Preparation: After anesthetizing the tooth, we will create an opening in the crown to access the pulp chamber.
- Nerve Tissue Removal: The infected nerve tissue is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and each individual root.
- Cleaning and Shaping: The root canal system is thoroughly cleaned, shaped, and prepared for filling.
- Filling with Gutta Percha: Once cleaned, the root canal is filled with gutta percha, and a sealer is applied to ensure the space is sealed.

Success & Aftercare
Root canal treatment boasts a high success rate, with many teeth being saved through this procedure.
In some cases, the treatment may require multiple visits. If this is necessary, a temporary filling will be placed to protect the tooth until your next appointment. During your return visit, we will remove the temporary filling, re-clean the root canal system, and place the gutta percha.
After the root canal treatment, a permanent filling is placed. If a significant tooth structure was removed during the procedure, we may recommend placing a crown to prevent further fractures.
After treatment, the crown or filling placed will blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, making it difficult for others to notice that you had a root canal.
Putting Your Oral Health First
Proper oral hygiene is essential after root canal treatment. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups will help maintain the health of your treated tooth and prevent future issues.
